Dear Team Members, Residents and Families,
At The Springs of Arkansas, being a giver is at the heart of who we are. Whether it’s providing the best possible care to our residents or supporting our dedicated team members in our nursing and rehab facilities, our mission is always centered on giving—both to our community and to each other.
I wanted to take a moment to express how incredibly proud I am of the continuous spirit of giving that runs through all of our facilities here at The Springs of Arkansas. From donations of snacks to our brave local fire departments, like the recent contribution from The Springs of Searcy, to the ongoing support we provide to local food pantries, we are making a meaningful impact in our communities.
I also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Twin Lakes Baptist Church for their generous donation from the children who participated in Vacation Bible School. Our residents are absolutely thrilled with the new supplies and games, which have brought joy and excitement to their days.
I was recently shown a short letter from a Mr. Russell Lindsey. He expressed his sincere gratitude to our team members at The Springs of Magnolia. He specifically mentioned how he recognized the “love and care” that our team members provided him in his rehab journey, and how it meant everything to him. This is true giving in its highest form. Kudos to all of you for your professionalism and caring.
Thank you all for your continued support, kindness, and commitment to making a difference.
Warm regards,
Chaim Herzberg

Halloween can be a fun and festive time for everyone, including seniors in nursing homes. While some traditional activities may not be suitable for elderly residents, there are many creative ways to ensure they enjoy the holiday in a way that’s safe, inclusive, and engaging. Here are some tips for making Halloween special for seniors living in nursing homes.
Decorating the nursing home for Halloween can lift residents’ spirits and get everyone in the holiday mood. Opt for decorations that are lighthearted and festive rather than spooky or scary, as some seniors may not enjoy or feel comfortable with overly frightening imagery. Classic Halloween symbols like pumpkins, fall leaves, and friendly ghosts can be arranged to create a warm, nostalgic atmosphere.
Consider incorporating decorations that bring back memories, such as vintage-style Halloween decorations from the 1950s, ’60s, or ’70s. This can spark conversations and help seniors reminisce about how they celebrated the holiday in their younger years.
Crafting is a great way to involve seniors in the holiday. Simple, enjoyable Halloween-
themed projects can include:
These activities encourage creativity and provide an opportunity for socializing with other
residents.
Costume parades are a wonderful way to bring Halloween fun into the nursing home. Encourage staff, volunteers, and visiting family members to wear fun, friendly costumes. Some residents may enjoy dressing up too, but make sure costumes are easy to wear and comfortable. Even small accessories like Halloween-themed hats, scarves, or funny glasses can help seniors feel festive without being burdensome.
If possible, invite local school children or community groups to walk in the parade. Intergenerational activities can bring great joy to seniors and make the holiday feel more vibrant and lively.
Some seniors may prefer quieter celebrations, and a Halloween movie or story night could be just the ticket. Choose lighthearted, family-friendly Halloween movies like Hocus Pocus, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, or old classic films that aren’t too scary.
Alternatively, a storytelling session featuring classic ghost stories, told in a gentle and engaging way, can provide a little Halloween excitement without being overwhelming.
If the nursing home has the capacity, consider hosting a trick-or-treat event for local children. Seniors can hand out candy from their designated areas. For those who may not be able to participate fully, they can still enjoy seeing the kids in their costumes and experiencing the festive atmosphere.
For health reasons, ensure that any candy or treats handed out are pre-packaged and meet any dietary restrictions of the residents.
Celebrate Halloween by serving themed snacks or a special meal. You could have pumpkin- shaped cookies, caramel apples, or Halloween-colored Jell-O. However, be mindful of dietary restrictions, such as diabetes or swallowing difficulties. Health-conscious but fun alternatives, like sugar-free candy or soft-textured snacks, can still bring the fun of Halloween while keeping residents healthy.
You could even organize a baking session where residents can help make simple Halloween treats, allowing them to feel involved in the festivities.
Bring in the fun with a Halloween music party! Play songs like “Monster Mash” or other festive tunes that residents can enjoy. Some might like to dance, while others may prefer to watch and tap their feet. Music has a way of energizing people and bringing smiles, so keep the vibe upbeat and joyful.
If your residents are more comfortable with oldies, consider playing Halloween-themed songs from their era, such as spooky jazz standards or fun pop songs from the 1950s and 1960s.
While Halloween is a time for fun, it’s important to remember the safety needs of seniors. Make sure all decorations, costumes, and activities are appropriate for the residents’ mobility and health conditions:
One of the best ways to ensure seniors enjoy Halloween is by creating an atmosphere of joy and connection. Whether it’s through a shared activity, watching a Halloween movie, or simply sitting with residents and chatting about their favorite Halloween memories, the sense of togetherness is what makes the holiday truly special.
Halloween can be a delightful time for seniors in nursing homes with just a bit of creativity and planning. By focusing on safe, inclusive, and engaging activities, nursing home staff and family members can ensure that residents have a Halloween filled with joy, nostalgia, and fun.
